Week 1 Blog

When the integration of technology comes up there is a “why” factor. This is a very important criteria to justify what matters most. Technologies need to be chosen that will best accomplish what we are trying to achieve, the mission whatever that may be in the moment. The interviewee focused on emotional intelligence at Orange County Department of Education. It is the element that “gets at what makes people tick” (bstachowiak & McClay, 2021). Dr. Hittenberger is also very people focused, that THEY be at the center. That his mission is at the center. People, the mission, the desired goal is the why of everything to them. They also approach technological applications with a mindfulness about how the technology is being used.

Dr. Hittenberger extols ISTE 2.3 Citizen standards in their application as well as use of technology in professional and personal terms. Creating positive experiences (2.3a) and managing and protecting data (2.3d, ISTE, 2024). Mentoring students as an example of how one models and promotes their digital identity. Engaging in best practices of oneself. He illustrates this with his analogy about the email, and whether to send it.

They created a team of about 1500 employees who participate in learning groups. The subjects range from growth mindset, to emotional intelligence, with opportunities to keep growing. The goal is that they will be more effective in carrying out their mission and doing their jobs.

Their challenge is to  achieve natural connections by focusing on a human-centered design to thinking for education. It draws from a teachers past experiences they use when they design educational spaces. The curriculum and learning experiences are designed by them. They start with empathy. They are always in a beta state always looking for possible ways to prototype solutions and test them out through a cyclical process of making it better.

The fact that this approach is adaptive is promising. When things don’t work looking at why and working to solve that problem gives the program more longevity. There is an organic way of prototyping solutions and testing them out. This type of approach makes me less apprehensive about integrating more technology into curriculum if it satisfies the mission. Making the experiences in the office or on the website in a more human experience builds a better community where every student is able to thrive.
