Alms for the Arts - Week 5

Central Public School currently provides WiFi access to students in their parking lot from 8 am until 9 pm for students to use with their own personal devices. With the current state of some programs continuing or being discontinued that may change. Currently we do no know how education is going to be affected by current and future policies coming from the federal government. Should it discontinue it will have a drastic effect on our student body because they may lose one of the few access points to free internet and depending on socioeconomic state of their household their options will become more limited for access. It isn’t an issue at present but it may become one in the future.

For artistic instruction much of the technology needed for introductory and intermediate instruction still remains rather analog. Art instruction is more of an umbrella term for multiple disciplines of artistic instruction. Technologies can be integrated into some disciplines but often times at more advanced levels of instruction. Like one wouldn’t teach Drivers Ed. and hand the keys to a Ferarri over to a first time driver, the same would be said with drawing that the first thing the student would use would not be digital in nature. A student who plans on pursuing visual arts either in higher education or as a career might need a tablet and drawing utensil at a junior or senior level after completing some basic classes. A student who has completed some drawing and painting instruction might receive some graphic design instruction after they are familiar with the basics of the discipline. Students who have completed digital photography classes might then get experience with Photoshop for correction and manipulation of digital images.

Funding options? Currently federal funds available for adding or expanding arts instruction in K-12 schools are the Assistance for Arts Education program, which is the main funding source for arts education, supporting activities like professional development for arts educators, development of learning materials, and community outreach. It is managed by the Well-Rounded Education (WRE) Program Division. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) provides grants for various arts projects, including those that engage the public with art, provide arts education, and integrate arts into community strategies. They support a wide range of arts disciplines, including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, literary arts, and media arts education. The Oklahoma Arts Council (.gov) offers Essential Arts Education Grants for Schools, which can be used to reimburse expenses like teaching artist fees and consumable supplies. Additionally, the American School Theatre Association of Oklahoma (ASTA-OK) provides Small Grant Support for Schools, which can be used for arts education programs during and outside of the school day.

First Draft…… I still have to read up the research
